The final concept for the film will be decided in collaboration with the participating filmmakers, however to give an idea of how the film might go about exploring the central question we have devised an example concept below:
A group of emerging filmmakers from around the world (each of whom has omitted the mother figure from a screenplay involving a family) will direct their own section of this collaborative hybrid documentary.
Each filmmaker will discuss this screenplay with their mother, explaining why they chose to erase the mother character from their story. Following this, the filmmaker will stage and direct a pivotal scene from their screenplay as their mother observes their child direct from behind the camera.
Finally, the scene will be restaged, this time with the filmmaker’s mother stepping into the role of the absent mother, effectively inserting herself into a story from which she was originally omitted, free to improvise, interrupt, or reorient the scene in any way she choose.
